Washington, June 19, 2025 - The House of Representatives began debating a new border security bill that proposes to expand physical barriers, hire 5,000 new Border Patrol agents and tighten asylum processing.

Democrats denounced that the law ignores human rights and does not include comprehensive immigration reform. “We are returning to failed policies that separate families and criminalize migration,” said Congresswoman Lina Cortez (Texas).

Still without a definite date for a vote, the bill could stall in the Senate, where a more moderate version is being negotiated.

The move was welcomed by technology companies, although academics and civil rights organizations have expressed concern about the reduction of ethical and fairness checks on algorithms.
